How to configure 802.1Q tag VLAN on Web Smart Switch
A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a network topology configured according to a logical scheme rather than the physical layout. Hosts in the same VLAN communicate with each other as if they are in a LAN. However, hosts in different VLANs cannot communicate with each other directly.
Now let´s learn how to configure the tag VLAN on Web Smart Switch by the following example:
Network Topology:
Here we take TL-SG2216WEB which has 16 ports as an example.
Switch A connects to Switch B with an Ethernet cable in port 1.Switch A connects to the Internet via TL-R480T in port 16.
The computers of Finance Dept. connect to port2-8 of switch A and port2-8 of switch B. The Sales Dept. connect to port 9-14 of switch A and port 9-14 of switch B.
Purpose:
1 The computers from Finance Dept. can communicate with each other.
2 The computers from Sales Dept. can communicate with each other.
3 The computers of Finance Dept. and Sales Dept. can´t communicate with each other.
4 Both the Finance Dept. and Sales Dept. can go to Internet through TL-R480T.
VLAN Configuration parameters:
To achieve the purpose, we configure 3 VLANs:VLAN2,VLAN3,VLAN4.
To achieve Purpose 1, we create the VLAN2 (VID=2):
Switch A:
Port:port1-8,16.
The egress frame of Port 1 is Add Tag, The rest are Drop Tag.
VIDs are 2 as default. PVIDs of Port 2-8 are 2
Switch B:
Port :port1-8
The egress frame of Port 1 is Add Tag, The rest are Drop Tag.
VIDs are 2 as default. PVIDs for Port 2-8 are 2
To achieve Purpose 2, we create the VLAN3(VID=3):
Switch A:
Port:port1,9-14,16
The egress frame of Port 1 is Add Tag, The rest are Drop Tag.
VIDs are 3 as default. PVIDs of Port 9-14 are 3.
Switch B:
Port :port1,9-14.
The egress frame of Port 1 is Add Tag, The rest are Drop Tag.
VIDs are 3 as default. PVIDs of Port 9-14 are 3.
In fact, we have already achieved the Purpose 3 by setting VLAN2 and VLAN3.
To achieve Purpose 4, we create the VLAN4(VID=4).PVID of Port 16 is 4.
Switch A:
Port:port1-14,16.
The egress frame of Port 1 is Add Tag, The rest are Drop Tag. VIDs are 4 as default.
Switch B:
Port :port1-14.
The egress frame of Port 1 is Add Tag, The rest are Drop Tag. VIDs are 4 as default.
Now ,let’s start to configure Switch A:
Part I:Defining VLAN Mode:
Please go to VLAN Setting->VLAN Mode to choose the Tag VLAN(802.1Q Tag VLAN).
Part II: Setting VLANs:
Please go to VLAN Setting->Tag VLAN Setting to set the parameters of VLAN.
The Tag VLAN Setting page contains a table that maps VLAN parameters to ports. A port becomes a member of a certain VLAN when it is ticked.
Step 1:Choose the VLAN 2.
Step 2:Tick the port which is assigned to VLAN 2.Then click submit.
Step 3:Set the parameters for VLAN 3 and VLAN 4.Don’t forget to submit.
Part III: Tag VLAN Global Setting
Please go to VLAN Setting->tag VLAN Global Setting to set the PVID parameters.
PVID assigns a VLAN ID to untagged packets. Please set the PVID for ports in the Tag VLAN Global Setting page.
Until now, we have finished the configuration for Switch A.
Configure Switch B
Please configure Switch B in the same way. Here is a screen shot of Tag VLAN Global Setting of Switch B.
Now, the network will work as described in Purpose.
