Objective

This article introduces how to customize a profile of the Bonjour Service, and realize the use of Bonjour Service between different VLANs through mDNS Service on Omada Controller.

Requirements

  • Omada Controller (software Controller / hardware Controller / CBC, v5.9 and above)
  • Omada AP

Introduction

For the AP supporting Omada Controller prior to v5.9 only, mDNS only forwards packets within the LAN according to the protocol.

For the AP supporting Omada v5.9 or above, you can customize the profile of Bonjour Service and use Bonjour Service between different VLANs.

  • Bonjour Service: Omada Controller provides a variety profiles of Bonjour Service, which you can use directly or customize.
  • mDNS Service: You can configure the rules of mDNS cross VLAN forwarding, specify the VLAN ID of the Service Network and the VLAN ID of the Client Network, and realize the use of Bonjour Service between different VLANs.

The steps below uses EAP650 v1 for demonstration.

How to customize the profile of Bonjour Service

Step 1. Login Controller via web browser, go to Site Settings > Profile > Bonjour Service. There are a variety of profiles of Bonjour Services available here, and you can use them in the mDNS service module.

Step 2. Click Create New Bonjour Service.

Step 3. Fill in the Service Name and Service ID. Note that the Service ID needs to be filled in the format of _A._B.local. If the Bonjour Service has multiple Service IDs, click Add to add a new Service ID.

Step 4. Click Confirm to create the Service profile. The customized profile of Bonjour Service will be displayed in the list.

How do I use the Bonjour Service between different VLANs

Step 1. Go to Settings > Services > mDNS.

Step 2. Click Create New Rule.

Step 3. Fill in the rule information and click Apply.

  • Services Network: Fill in the VLAN ID of the network where Bonjour Service is located. Only one VLAN ID can be filled in.
  • Client Network: Fill in the VLAN ID of the network where Bonjour Client is located. You can fill in one or multiple VLAN IDs.

For example, If you want clients (non-wired clients) with VLAN IDs of 100 and 40 on the AP to discover and use the Bonjour Service of AirPlay with VLAN ID of 20, you can configure it like this: Check Enable in Status, set Device type to AP ( select Getaway if you need to configure rules for gateways), select AirPlay for Bonjour Service (you can select multiple Bonjour Services if needed), fill in 20 for VLAN in Services Network, fill in 100,40 for VLAN in Client Network. Then click Apply.

Note: Currently, mDNS cross VLAN forwarding does not support wired clients.

Conclusion

The above is how to use the related functions of Bonjour on Omada Controller, including the profile of Bonjour Service and the use of mDNS Service.

FAQ

Why Can't Bonjour Service Be Used across VLANS After mDNS cross VLAN Forwarding Rules Are Configured?

Re: Please check whether the Multicast Filtering function is turned on by the SSID and the mdns packet is filtered, which may cause the client connected to the SSID to be unable to use bonjour service.
