Outdoor Camera Vs. Indoor Camera: What's The Difference?

By len.javeloza

Cameras are a way for people to keep an eye on their homes, businesses and possessions. However, not every camera is made for all environments. There are a lot of security cameras on the market, and each one has its own set of benefits.

When comparing an outdoor camera with an indoor camera, you should consider your needs as well as what kind of surroundings you will be filming in.The difference between an indoor vs. outdoor camera has everything to do with the type of environment it is designed to be used in.

The differences between the outdoor and indoor camera lie in the following:

Durability Of The Camera

Outdoor cameras are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. They are built to handle rain, high humidity, snow and ice, wind and temperature fluctuation.

In order to do this well, outdoor security cameras need to be heavy-duty which also makes them more expensive than indoor cameras. If you want an outdoor camera that is specifically designed for extreme weather conditions then you will have to pay more up front but it will last longer in the long run.

On the other hand, cameras designed for indoor use are able to spend time indoors, shielded from the weather in a climate-controlled setting. They are not always as durable and constructed to the same high standards as outdoor CCTV cameras, and they frequently lack waterproofing. They may still be quite sturdy, impact- and dust-resistant, but they are not made to handle the constantly changing weather that outside cameras are.

Power Supply

Outdoor cameras are built to withstand extreme weather, so they require a lot more power than indoor cameras. Outdoor cameras may be solar powered or wired, and some are even battery-operated.

Since they are designed to be used outdoors, you can place them practically anywhere without worrying about them getting wet or damaged by the sun's rays. This makes them ideal for use in remote locations where there are not any outlets available.

In contrast, indoor cameras need to be recharged every now and then while some are also wired.

Price

Outdoor cameras are often more expensive than indoor cameras. This is mostly because they are more durable, weatherproof and vandal-resistant and you can mount them on the outside of your home. They are also useful for monitoring your front or backyard because they won’t be obstructed by walls or ceiling fans like an indoor camera would be.

Contrary, an indoor security system is usually more affordable than an outdoor system because it does not require any special installation equipment or tools such as mounting brackets. You will simply need a power outlet near where you plan on placing the device so that it has access to electricity when needed.

Size

Outdoor security cameras will typically be significantly larger than indoor ones due to their stronger, frequently waterproof construction, however this is not a general rule. Indoor cameras are frequently created to be more discreetly positioned and less obvious in order to detract less from the inside, whilst outdoor cameras are typically less concerned with integrating into their surroundings.
