Introduction

Voice traffic is typically more time-sensitive and can be more influenced by packets loss than data traffic. You can configure Voice VLAN to optimize the transmission of voice traffic. Voice VLAN can change the 802.1p priority of voice packets and transmit the packets in a desired VLAN.

Network Requirement

As the following figure shows, Two IP Phones are connected to port 1/0/1 and port 1/0/2 of the switch. A PC is connected to port 1/0/3 of the switch. The switch is connected to the internet via a router through port 1/0/4. The IP Phones transmit voice traffic, while the PC transmits data traffic. The voice traffic requires a higher priority than the data traffic.

Configuration Scheme

To implement this requirement, you can configure as follows:

1) Create VLAN 2 and add port 1/0/1, port 1/0/2 and port 1/0/4 to the VLAN.

2) Configure VLAN 2 as Voice VLAN and set the priority of voice traffic as 7.

3) Enable Voice VLAN on port 1/0/1 and port 1/0/2.

Configuration Steps

Demonstrated with T2600G-28TS, the following sections provide configuration procedure.

Step 1

Choose the menu L2 FEATURES > VLAN > 802.1Q VLAN > VLAN Config and click Add to load the following page. Create VLAN 2 for the voice traffic. Specify the VLAN name as Voice_VLAN. There is no need to add the ports which are connected to the IP Phones. Only need to add uplink port 1/0/4 to VLAN 2, for example, we set it as untagged port here. Click Create.

Step 2

Choose the menu QoS > Voice VLAN > Global Config to load the following page. Enable Voice VLAN globally. Specify the VLAN ID as 2 and set the priority as 7. Click Apply.

Step 3

Choose the menu QoS > Voice VLAN > Port Config to load the following page. Enable Voice VLAN on port 1/0/1 and port 1/0/2. Click Apply.

Step 4

Choose the menu QoS > Voice VLAN > OUI Config to load the following page. Check the OUI table. Make sure that the OUI address of your voice device is contained in this table. If the source MAC address of a packet matches an OUI address in the OUI list, the switch identifies the packet as a voice packet and process it based on the configuration of Voice VLAN.
