How to implement Minimum RSSI in Omada APs ?
Objective
This article introduces how to understand minimum RSSI and how to implement this in Omada APs through Omada controller.
Requirements
- Omada Controller (Software Controller / or Hardware Controller /or CBC, v5.9 and above)
- Omada APs
Introduction
What is RSSI ? RSSI is a measurement of the power present in a received radio signal. It is typically expressed in decibels (dBm). A higher RSSI value indicates a stronger received signal, while a lower value indicates a weaker signal. Generally, a signal strength of -30 dBm to -60 dBm is considered very strong, -60 dBm to -70 dBm is strong, -70 dBm to -80 dBm is moderate, -80 dBm to -90 dBm is weak, and below -90 dBm is very weak. Different devices and applications may have different requirements for minimum RSSI.
Importance of setting Minimum RSSI
- Help roaming between different APs : When a device's connection to an AP weakens and falls below the minimum RSSI, it triggers a search for a better-connected AP. This ensures the device doesn't stay on a weak signal, reducing connection drops. It also promotes seamless roaming as the device is directed to APs with stronger signals, enhancing overall network performance and providing a more stable connection during movement.
- Connection Reliability: A minimum RSSI threshold can help ensure that devices connecting to a network have a reliable signal. If the signal strength is too low (below the minimum RSSI), it may lead to dropped connections, slow data transfer rates, or intermittent connectivity issues.
- Quality of Service: By setting a minimum RSSI, you can ensure that devices on the network receive a certain level of service. This is particularly important for applications that require a stable and strong signal, such as video streaming, online gaming, or voice over IP.
- Network Optimization: Understanding minimum RSSI can help in optimizing the placement of access points and other network devices. By monitoring RSSI levels, you can identify areas with weak signals and take steps to improve coverage, such as adjusting the position of access points or adding signal boosters.
How to implement Minimum RSSI in Omada APs ?
- Hereby we used Omada software controller as an example (hardware controller and cloud-based controller configurations of Minimum RSSI is similar as software controller).
- Open Omada software controller and click the AP which you would like to configure. Then you will see the “device configuration page” on the right side.
- Please go to “Config -> Advanced”, and then you will see below screenshot.
- Please make “RSSI Threshold” Enable, and then you can set the Minimum RSSI which you want.
- If you move your PC mouse onto the icon , you will see the explanation of this feature.
Conclusion
Setting minimum RSSI in an access point is important as it ensures stable connections and help client device roam between different APs. Devices with weak signals below the threshold won't connect, reducing connection drops and improving overall network performance. It also helps manage network congestion and can enhance security by filtering out weak, potentially unauthorized signals. Hope above article is helpful with you.
