How to Install TP-Link Omada Discovery Utility on Windows and macOS PCs

To manage EAPs that are in different subnets with the Omada Controller, as the following figure shows, you need to run an Omada Discovery Utility in the same subnet with the EAPs. Omada Discovery Utility can help EAPs find the Controller Host.

This document introduces how to install Omada Discovery Utility on a Windows PC and macOS PC, respectively. For the detailed configurations on each device, refer to How to manage EAPs in different subnets using Omada controller (via EAP Discovery Utility)? (New UI)

For Windows:

Step 1. Check If You’ve Installed JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.8

Omada Discovery Utility with V3.1.13 and above require the JRE 1.8. To check if you’ve already installed JRE 1.8, follow the steps below:

1. Press the Windows logo key Picture of the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.

2. Type in cmd and press the Enter key to open the CMD window.

3. Run the command java –version. If you’ve installed any version of JRE, the result will show the current Java version.

Step 2. Install JRE 1.8 on Computer

If your computer already has JRE 1.8, skip to Step 3. Otherwise, follow the steps below to install it.

1. Go to the Downloads page of Java SE Development Kit 8 (JRE 1.8):

https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html.

2. Click Accept License Agreement and choose the right version of JRE for your computer. For example, choose jdk-8u231-windows-x64.exe for Windows x64.

3. Double click the .exe file and follow the instructions to install JRE 1.8.

Step 3. Run Omada Discovery Utility

1. Download the latest version of Omada Discovery Utility from the website https://www.tp-link.com/support/download/eap-controller/#EAP_Discovery_Tool.

2. Unzip the file and double click the .jar file to run Omada Discovery Utility.

The home page of Omada Discovery Utility will appear, indicating Omada Discovery Utility is successfully installed and running on your computer.

For macOS:

Step 1. Check If You’ve Installed JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.8

Omada Discovery Utility with V3.1.13 and above require the JRE 1.8. To check if you’ve already installed JRE 1.8, follow the steps below:

1. Click the icon to enter Lanchpad.

2. Search for Terminal in the Lanchpad, and then open the Terminal .

3. Type in java –version to show the current Java version.

Step 2. Install JRE 1.8 on Computer

If your computer already has JRE 1.8, skip to Step 3. Otherwise, follow the steps below to install it.

1. Go to the Downloads page of Java SE Development Kit 8 (JRE 1.8): https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html.

2. Click Accept License Agreement and choose the right version of JRE for your computer. For example, choose jdk-8u231-macosx-x64.dmg for macOS.

3. Double click the .dmg file.

4. Double click the .pkg file and follow the instructions to install JRE 1.8.

Step 3. Run Omada Discovery Utility

1. Download the latest version of Omada Discovery Utility from the website https://www.tp-link.com/support/download/eap-controller/#EAP_Discovery_Tool.

2. Right click the .jar file and click Open.

3. On the pop-up window, click Open.

4. The home page of Omada Discovery Utility will appear, indicating Omada Discovery Utility is successfully installed and running on your computer.
