A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a network topology configured according to a logical scheme rather than the physical layout. Hosts in the same VLAN communicate with each other as if they are in a LAN. However, hosts in different VLANs cannot communicate with each other directly.

Now let´s learn how to configure the tag VLAN on Smart Switches by the following example:

Here we take TL-SG2424 and TL-SG2216 as an example.

TL-SG2424 connects to the Internet via TL-R480T+ in port 9, and connects to TL-SG2216 with an Ethernet cable in port 1.

The computers of Group A connect to port2-3 of TL-SG2424 and port2-3 of TL-SG2216. The Group B connects to port 4-8 of them.

Purpose

1 The computers from Group A can communicate with each other.

2 The computers from Group B can communicate with each other.

3 The computers of Group A and Group B can’t communicate with each other.

4 Both the Group A and Group B can go to Internet through TL-R480T+

To achieve Purpose 1, we create the VLAN whose VLAN ID is 100.

To achieve Purpose 2, we create the VLAN whose VLAN ID is 101

By setting VLAN 100 and 101, we have achieved Purpose 3.

To achieve Purpose 4, we create the VLAN whose VLAN ID is 102

The table above shows other parameters.

Now, let’s start to configure Switch TL-SG2424:

Step 1 Choose “802.1Q VLAN” in the “VLAN” menu:

Step 2 Enter the VLAN ID you want to create, and you could name the VLAN if you like. Click “Create” to save your configuration, you will find your created VLAN in the table below:

Step 3 Check the box on the left of your VLAN ID first, then you could choose which ports will be added to this VLAN in the table below. There are three ports rules as “Untagged”, “Tagged” and “NotMember”. As we design, select port 1 as Tagged port, ports 2-3 and 9 as Untagged, click “Apply” to save your configuration, then you’ll find in the “VLAN Table”, your configuration is displayed:

Step 4 After configuring all VLAN, check the “Select” box of any VLAN as you want, then set the PVID for each port. Don’t forget to “Apply”:

When you finish these steps above, VLAN on TL-SG2424 has been finished, then set VLAN on TL-SG2216 as these steps above, your functional VLAN could work as you want.

Note:

1. Only when specific VLAN has already been created that you could change a port’s PVID to VID of this VLAN. The correct steps to build several VLAN on switch is: 1.Create these VLAN 2.Select Member Ports 3.Set PVID for these ports.

2. Due to PVID of port is unique even if it belongs to more than one VLAN, you could choose any VLAN to set the PVID.
