TL-SL1218MP V1 Q&A and Troubleshooting
Please note that this article is only for TL-SL1218MP V1.
Usually the transmission distance is less than 100m. But at 10Mbps, transmission loss on the cable will be less, the transmission distance can reach to 250m. And TL-SL1218MP V1 supports 8-core power supply for decreasing the power transmission loss. So TL-SL1218MP V1 can support 250m transmission distance and power the devices.
PoE powered devices need compatible with PoE standards. (802.3af/at)
TL-SL1218MP V1 supports 8-core power supply for decreasing the power transmission loss. The following special PoE powered devices CANNOT be powered by TL-SL1218MP V1.
- The PoE powered devices that support PoE standard and Passive PoE.
- The PoE powered devices that support 8-core power supply and employ 1/2(-),3/6(+),4/5(+),7/8(-) for cable pins sequence.
It’s recommended to use Cat5e cable or higher. Long transmission distance needs better quality cable. Cat5e cable can meet the demand and 8-core cable can cooperate with 8-core power supply of TL-SL1218MP V1. (TL-SL1218MP V1 supports 8-core power supply for decreasing the power transmission loss.)
The maximum output power of TL-SL1218MP V1 can achieve 25.5W within 250m. It means that 802.3af and 802.3at PoE powered devices both can get 250m transmission distance from TL-SL1218MP V1.
Yes. The Extend and Priority Mode can be enable at the same time, they are the independent functions.
TL-SL1218MP V1 supports 8-core power supply for decreasing the power transmission loss. All pins of PoE powered device need to meet PoE standard.
EAP225 3.0 and EAP225-outdoor 1.0 supports 802.3af A mode and 24V Passive PoE (+4,5pins; -7,8pins). They use 4,5,7,8pins to support Passive PoE so cannot be powered by TL-SL1218MP V1.
Step 1
Check if your PD meets the following PoE requirements of TL-SL1218MPv1.
- 802.3af/at PoE standard
- Do not support Passive PoE
- Do not use 8-core power supply (1/2-,3/6+,4/5+,7/8-)
You can confirm the above information through your PD’s datasheet or ask PD’s manufacturer.
If your PD meets the requirements, please continue the following troubleshooting.
Step 2
Leave only one PD connected to the switch, if the PD can be powered on, it means that the total power of all devices may exceeds the PoE Power Budget of TL-SL1218MP V1 (192W).
Step 3
Change another switch’s port to connect PD, if the PD can be powered on, maybe the PoE port of TLSL1218MP V1 is broken. If your switch meets the warranty policy, you can try to ask reseller or TP-Link Support for RMA.

Step 4
If the transmission distance is more than 100m, please try to reduce the distance. If your PD can powered on under short distance, it means that the problem may be caused by the quality of the cable. Please try to change the cable to cat5e or higher under long distance.
Step 5
If your cable is cat5e or higher, try to use cat5 cable (4-core). If your PD can be powered on through 4-core cable, it means that the circuit design of PD may be not compatible with TL-SL1218MP V1. They can work only with 4-core cable.
Step 6
If the above steps cannot confirm your problem and you have other PoE switch, please try to test whether other PoE switch can power the PD. If the PD can be powered on by other PoE switch, maybe PD is not compatible with TL-SL1218MP V1. Please contact TP-Link Support.
